What Customers and Clients Are You Missing If You Are NOT Using Social Media?

Using social media for your business should be one of your marketing strategies.  There are more people today on social media than there are watching television!  Imagine being able to reach out to these people and so they can see what you and your business are all about.

Steps for a social media strategy

Be sure to have a social media strategy in place

I originally started using Facebook when I owned an Amish Furniture / Antiques store.  It is very nerve wracking when you are sitting in an empty store waiting for customers to come in and buy something.  I was at their mercy, waiting on their timing and their agenda.  I first got started by creating a Facebook page.  I started connecting with my friends and family and had them all like our stores page and share it with their friends.  When our customers came in I always told them to check us out on Facebook.  I created a page where people could see what I was purchasing for the store when I was out in Lancaster PA.  I posted the progress of custom orders.  I showed unfinished pieces and then what they looked like after I picked them up from our finisher.  Our customers loved it!  Seeing all the activity going on at the store got them to get into their cars and stop in.  It gave them ideas of things they wanted for their homes.

Social Media Interaction

Between awareness and engagement lies interaction

Social media is a way to reach out.  Connecting with people you may never have had a chance to if you didn’t reach out to them via your fan page.  How could you have gotten a customer from Nevada if your business was located in New Hampshire?  Social media closes the gap and makes the world much more accessible.

Foster your relationships on social media with your clients and customers.  They want to know you are there for them and they can talk to you if they need to.  They will also appreciate the information you provide on your pages.  Doing this creates a personalized experience for everyone.  Your next big sale may be one “like” or “tweet” away!!!

Social Media Etiquette – Minding Your Manners

As in everyday life there are ways to interact with people, behave in situations and, as our parents told us, to mind our manners.  This also applies when you use social media.  There are certain rules and etiquette to follow to maintain a solid social media presence.  Whether you just have a personal Facebook page or are posting on sites for your business, here are some rules to follow to make your social media use a pleasant one.

Etiquette 101

Are you following the rules for social media etiquette?

1:  Of course mind your language!  Using fowl language is becoming more and more acceptable but there are still a boat load of people who don’t want to hear it or read it.  If you know your followers  and they don’t mind then go ahead.   Of course, your future employer may be reading it too.

2:  Make the time to engage.  Don’t just post and run.  If someone is speaking with you through posts be sure to answer them back.  Social Media is about being social.  Did you niece post about an accomplishment?  Tell her good job!  On the business front, the number one complaint people have about business fan pages is that when they try and interact with the company they get no response.  This can turn loyal customers to a competitor.   Be sure that you are responding in a timely manner.

3:  Keep your postings interesting.  Do you like to hear someone post every morning that they are at Starbucks getting their half-caff cinnamon latte?  I am sure there is a lot of interesting things going on in your life that your friends and followers would love to hear about.  They do want to know about your life, just not the mundane stuff.  If you have a business page don’t always push the sale.  We always refer to the hatred of the “used car salesman” so don’t be him!  Tips, tricks, pictures and valuable content is key!  Ask questions and get your followers engaged.

4.  Keep your content original.  Don’t highjack other people’s content, posts, information or pictures without giving them credit.  We you start claiming other peoples work as your own you will most likely be called on it, and not in a nice way.  Sharing is always fine but be sure you are not claiming it as your own.  On your business pages and profiles you always want to give the original person the credit for articles, quotes or memes.  Keep your content original, in your own voice.

5.  Promoting your agenda.  Always ask if you can post your business or event on other people’s profiles.  You can post whatever you like on your own pages.  Ask your friends, family and followers to share if you want to get the word out.  Posting your event, article, blog or business profile on someone else’s page is like invading their personal space.  It will usually leave a bad taste in that persons’ mouth and make them less likely to support you.  I’ve even seen people get blocked because of it.

Oh the Drama

Save the Drama for Your Mama!

6.  Avoid the Drama.  As the saying goes “Save the Drama for your Mama!”  Do not air your dirty laundry, pick fights or bad mouth others.  Keep all that off line.  Social Media is somewhere people like to spend time and see all the good going on.  It has also become a place to learn about breaking news.  Sometimes that news is bad or tragic but try not to dwell on that or expand on the negativity of it.  Yes, some people love the drama but it is best to avoid it.

Is Your Airport Utilizing Social Media?

Airports are jumping onto the social media band wagon with both feet.  Most of your major airports have discovered that they can connect with travelers on a more personal level.  Travelers are finding that they can get in touch with someone quickly using Twitter and Facebook.  Airports using social media is making for a better customer experience.

Airports are using social media to connect with travelers

Facebook and Twitter have become key sources of information for travelers regarding weather related delays and cancellations, terminal issues and airline problems and strikes.  Facebook has engaged the traveler with questions regarding their favorite travel destinations, how to cope with the fear of flying, or what is the best thing they pack in their carry-on.  Fans are even engaging when they are not traveling.  Reveling in other fans travels and voicing their opinions on “where to go” and “what to see” subjects.

Twitter followers on the other hand want the quick status updates.  Flight delayed, check. Weather at the airport, check.  Traffic conditions surrouding the hub, got it!  Twitter followers are also the quickest to update when there is a problem or issue.  Airports are responding to grievances and questions quickly using Twitter thus keeping their cusomers happy.

With airlines tweeting their flights status' travelers are kept up to date on the latest delays and cancellations.

Social media has helped Airports become more human.  They are stepping out and engaging with travelers which in turn makes for a happier experience.  The next time you travel, check in at the airport, share your travel adventures on Facebook and tweet your best travel tip!  We would love to hear it!

Are You Using Instagram Personally and for Business?

Are you using Instagram

Use Instagram to upload pictures to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and more

Are you using Instagram?  Mark Zuckerberg hopes that you are.  He/Facebook just purchased the company for 1 billion dollars.  What’s all the fuss?

Instagram is a free app that allows you to take pictures and share them with your friends.  Post them the way they are or customize them with filters to transform the look and feel.  You then can share them on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr too.

Instagram was launch in October of 2010 in San Fransisco California.  Its distinctive feature confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images.  You could originally download the app to your Apple iPhone or iPad but this past April 2012, they released an app for Android users.  As of April 2012 there are over 30 million accounts set up on Instagram.

What can you do with Instagram?  Down load the app on your smart phone and use the app to start taking pictures.  When you take a picture you can keep it the way it is or add a filter to change its appearance.  Make your photo black and white or sepia.  There are numerous different filters to choose from.  When you’re done, post it on your Instagram profile.  You can also share your pictures on Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and many other different sites. You can follow your friends on Instagram too, seeing their world through visually stimulating content.  You can use hashtags “#” to promote your pictures or your brand.  Hashtags allows search engines to find your content as it relates to a topic.  Since search engines can’t “read” pictures, hashtags allows you to bring to light the subject of your picture.  In my examples I would use #snowman.
